About this Design

This design features two standing figures in a black and white, hand-drawn style. One figure is a winged angel pointing towards a robed woman who holds a book. Both figures have circular halos around their heads, suggesting a religious or saintly theme. The angel has intricate feather details on the wings, while the woman's robe displays decorative patterns.

This depiction of the Annunciation is based off the Gladzor Gospels. The Gladzor Gospel is an illuminated manuscript created in the 1300s in the Armenian region. The manuscript is a lovely piece of illumination and calligraphy with bright, vibrant colors. Taken from a larger image in the work, the figures here depict Gabriel telling the Virgin Mary that she will bear a child. I've recreated it as a hand-carved block print and printed it by hand before scanning it to make this design.
